The Republic of Ireland lies on the island called Ireland which is located in the North Atlantic Ocean. Ireland is the third-largest island of Europe and about five sixths of the island, from the west to the east and the north-west to south, is covered by the Republic of Ireland. The smaller part in the north-east is taken from Northern Ireland which belongs to the United Kingdom.
The low central plains, which are typical for the geography of Ireland, are surrounded by a ring of coastal mountains. With 1041 meters, Carrauntohill is the highest peak of Ireland. The island is divided by its longest stream, the River Shannon, which flows into the Atlantic Ocean to the south. About 12 000 km2 of Ireland is bogland. Made by human activity and the Irish weather, raised bogs are most common at the basin of River Shannon. On the island of Inishtrahull off the coast of County Donegal, you can find the oldest known rock of Ireland which is about 1,7 billion years old.
Due to the warming influence of the North Atlantic drift, the climate of Ireland is temperate and much warmer than other destinations which share the same latitude. Because of the breaking of the wind at the high mountains at the west coast, there is much more rainfall than in Dublin, the capital of the Republic of Ireland, which is located at the east coast.
The Irish are proud of their history and their independence from the United Kingdom. Irish pubs are famous all over the world and nearly every European city has one because of its unique atmosphere. This is the place were people meet: Playing their fiddles or the harp and singing their old Irish folk songs, remembering the traditions of their forefathers with events like the world-famous St. Patrick's Day, the people of Ireland are sociable and enjoy their life on the island with a good pint of their special dark beer - Guinness.
