The Kingdom of Denmark lies in northern Europe and is the southernmost Nordic country. Although it belongs to Scandinavia, Denmark is not situated on the Scandinavian Peninsula but on the peninsula of Jutland. Its only neighbor by land is Germany to the south, and Denmark is bordered by the Baltic Sea and the North Sea. A huge number of small islands,405 of which 323 are inhabited, are also part of Denmark. The major ones are Funen and Zealand, Greenland and Faroe Islands are also crown territories of Denmark, but each of them has political Home Rule.
Denmark's position between the Baltic Sea and the North Sea has been influential on the country's development in trade and political and military strategy. Denmark is one of the oldest states in Europe. Since the end of the 10th century, when Denmark was united into a single kingdom, the country has been independent. Today Queen Margrethe II. is the head of state over 5,3 million citizens. The biggest city of Denmark is its capital Copenhagen.
The coastline of Denmark is about 7300 km2 long. The highest point is only 173 meters above sea-level. The country's landscape is very undulating and varied. There is not much undisturbed nature to be found, nearly every place in this small country shows signs of human acitity. The Danish people live a life far away from the other hectic European countries. They have a more peaceful and calm way of living. Denmark is popular for its little towns with picturesque houses in old-fashioned style and the world famous author of fairy tales, Hans Christian Andersen.
