The kingdom of Norway lies on the western and northern part of the Scandinavian peninsula. The Nordic country borders Sweden, Finland and Russia and is bounded for its entired length by the different North Atlantic Seas: the North Sea in the southwest, the Skaggerak to the south, the Norwegian Sea to the west and the Barents Sea to the northeast. The arctic island archipelagos Svalbard and Jan Mayen are not part of metropolitan Norway but they are part of the kingdom.

Including these islands, Norway is a large country with an area of about 386 000 km2, but only about 4,5 million people live here. Oslo, with its 512 000 citizens, is the biggest city of Norway and also its capital. 25 % of Norway is covered with forest, leaving only 3 % of arable land. The country is divided by a mountain range called Langfjellne. The landscape was shaped during the Ice Age. Beautiful fjords, long narrow inlets of the sea, nearly like valleys are flanked by tall mountains.

Because of its location on the Gulf Stream, the climate of Norway is much warmer than you would expect of a country with such a high latitude. Summers can be very warm with up to 30 degrees Celsius. It´s perfect for hiking, biking or kayaking, wildwater rafting and glacier exploration. The length of wintertime and the amount of snow is very variable. In the inland it can get as cold as -25 decrees Celsius. Many mountain areas are permanent glaciers. The main income of Norway is the petroleum industry in the North Sea. Besides the oil, the country has a lot of natural resources like fish and minerals.
