Though the Sudetes and the Carpathian Mountains are the big mountain chains in the south, the landscape of Poland is almost low-land in the North Western Plains. Here the hills have an average height of 173 meters, the highest point of the country is Rysy. It rises 2499 meters from up the ground and is located in the Tatra mountains which belong to the Carpathian Mountains. Many long rivers are crossing the country, like Vistula, Warta or Oder. The largest and most visited lake-district of Poland is called Masuria, which is located in the northeast. The temperate climate of the country offers cold, cloudy and moderately severe winters and mild summers with frequent showers and thunderstorms. Its countryside has a variety of regions with beautiful landscapes and small-scale organic and traditional farms. Ancient forests are inviting visitors for a walk through the beautiful nature of Poland.
The location of the country between Western and Eastern Europe and its rich history influenced the culture and tradition. Many travellers and different nations left their marks in Poland. Famous Poles like filmmakers Roman Polanski and KiƩslowski, composer Chopin or writer Joseph Conrad show the wide range of Polish achievements in the fine arts and became world-known through their works.
