The Republic of Finland is a Nordic country and the third, after Norway and Sweden, which is situated on the Scandinavian peninsula. Finland is surrounded by the Baltic Sea to the southwest, the Gulf of Finland to the south and the Gulf of Bothnia to the west. Besides Norway to the north and Sweden to the south, Finland is boardering Russia to the east. About 5,2 million people are living in Finland, most of them in its capital Helsiniki.
Finland is often called "The Land with the thousand lakes". This number is much underrated: In the area of Finland you can find more than 187 000 lakes and over 173 000 islands. About 10% of the country is filled with water, Lake Saimaa is the fifth largest lake in Europe. Unlike its Scandinavian neighbors, Sweden and Norway, the landscape of Finland is mostly flat with few hills. You can find big mountains only in the north. The highest point of Finland is Mount Halti with 1328 meters. On Northern Finland a subarctic climate dominates the weather, while in the south there is a more temperate climate.
One of the world's most significant attractions can be experienced in Finland: The Midnight Sun, which centers near the summer solstice. Because of its high latitude, the sun never sets during the night above the Arctic Circle and even in the south of Finland it does not get dark. In winter you can witness the opposite: the Arctic Night, when the sun never comes up at all and daylight in the south is limited to a few hours.
Today Finland is a very modern country with a highly technology industry. Wood, paper and fish are the most imporant article for export. A world known invention of Finland is the sauna. In their free time the Finns are enjoying a stay at their summer cottages with their families, they go hiking, fishing or swimming. If you travel to the north to the region of Lappland, you can see many reindeers and maybe you are able to meet Santa Claus, who - so its rumoured - uses to live here.
