On the tip of the Balkanian peninsula in southern Europe lies Greece. The country's landneighbours are Albania, Macedonia and Bulgaria to the north and Turkey to the east. Greece is surrounded by the waters of the Aegean Sea to the east and from the Ionian and Mediterranean Sea to the west and the south. Around 3000 islands belong to Greece. The most famous of these islands are Crete, Rhodes, Kos and Euboea. The long and rich history of Greece has influenced the whole western civilization and can still be witnessed throughout the country, especially in the capital city Athens.
As a result of a rare geomorphology, Greece has a particularly rich and diversified natural environment. The Greek area has more than 15 000 kilometres of coastline and a land boundary of 1160 kilometres. About 80% of the country is covered by mountains and hills, which makes it one of the most montainous countries of Europe. The highest point of the country is Mount Olympus with 2919 meters. Also 50% of the country is filled with forest, which offers a variety of different vegetation. Many natural lakes, lagoons and wetland can be found mostly in Western Greece.
The Mediterranean climate of Greece brings plenty of sunshine, mild temperatures and a limited amount of rainfall. In summer, the dry hot days are cooled by seasonal winds called the meltemi, while mountainous regions have generally lower temperatures. The winters are mild in lowland areas, with a minimum amount of snow.
If you want to experience the ancient Greek cultural achievements, want to take a ride to the different islands or you prefer lying at the sandy beaches and take a cool refreshment, Greece has something to offer for everyone. And at the evening you can go to a nice little restaurant, eat traditional and delicious Greek cuisine and start with an "Ouzo" (its a hard liquor) and a tasty glass of Greek wine into the nightlife.
