The kingdom of Spain is located on the Iberian Peninsula in southwestern Europe. The country is borderd by the Bay of Biscay, the Mediterranian Sea, the North Atlantic Ocean and the Pyrenees Mountains. King Juan Carlos I. rules over 50 provinces of different climates and history. Most of the 40.2 million citizens live in the capital of Madrid.
The explorer Christopher Columbus crossed the Atlantic Ocean and reached the New World, America, in 1492 under the flag of Spain. This was the beginning of the wealth of the Spanish Empire. During the 16th century, under the reigns of Charles V. and Philipp II., Spain was the most powerful nation in Europe. The rich and noble country became the centre of a global empire with colonies and territories in North, Central and South America, the Philippines, Portugal, southern Italy, Germany and the Netherlands. It was the time of exploration by sea and by land. New goods like spices, metals and new agricultural plants were traded and became popular in Europe. Also a lot of knowledge was brought to Europe by foreigners. The Spanish treasure fleets transported these new goods as well as gold and silver from its colonies to Spain and so the country grew richer and more powerful. This Golden Age of Spain ended in the mids of the 17th century.
In the 20th century Spain has overcome civil wars and fascism and offers a wide range of great cultural achievements in architecture and art which remind of the past times in its capital Madrid as well as in other big cities like Barcelona, Valencia or Sevilla. The famous nightlife of Spain is perfect to celebrate and on the next day you can relax at the sandy beaches.
